IDA18 Replenishment

The Eighteenth Replenishment of IDA (IDA18) is the largest replenishment in IDA’s 56-year history and heralds a significant step change in its policy and financing framework. Building on its global leadership and proven partnership with the poorest countries, IDA will enable countries to implement the ambitious development agenda agreed in 2015.

Responding to heightened global ambitions and escalating risks, IDA18 presents a paradigm shift in how it mobilizes finance to help IDA clients achieve their development goals. The IDA18 replenishment is the largest in IDA’s 56-year history and heralds a significant step change in its policy and financing framework. IDA18 was finalized in December 2016 and will finance projects over the three-year period from July 1, 2017 to June 30, 2020.

IDA clients face a myriad of complex and interrelated challenges in the new global economy, calling for innovative approaches to development. These challenges call for a new IDA, underpinned by a transformational, ambitious policy and financial package. The IDA18 package responds to the calls from the G20 and international community for the World Bank Group to innovate and do everything it can to be a critical implementation agent for achieving the 2030 Agenda.

Every three years, donors meet to replenish IDA resources and review its policy framework. The replenishment process typically consists of four formal meetings held over the course of one year. In addition to officials from donor governments (known as “IDA Deputies”), representatives of borrowing member countries are invited to participate to help ensure that IDA’s policy and financing frameworks are responsive to country needs. Four IDA18 replenishment meetings were held in 2016:

  • March 14-15, 2016, in Paris, France
  • June 21-24, 2016, in Nay Pyi Taw, Myanmar
  • October 10-11, 2016, in Washington, D.C.
  • December 14-15, 2016 – Yogyakarta, Indonesia
