Economic growth can change lives, but it isn’t enough on its own. Escaping poverty requires growth that delivers more—and better-quality—jobs. It also requires sustainable investment in infrastructure, increased private capital, healthcare, education, and strong institutions.
Many IDA-supported countries face daunting challenges. Millions—mainly young people—lack jobs or are unemployed or underemployed. Over the next 10 to 15 years, 1.2 billion more will enter the workforce. Without urgent action, many will face uncertain prospects. Creating formal jobs is vital, but raising productivity and incomes in the informal sector is equally important.
The solution: support private sector growth. Businesses create jobs, raise incomes, and boost productivity. When the environment is right—especially with trade and skills for women and youth—businesses expand, hire, and drive broad development.
Better jobs mean higher incomes and more spending, which fuels the economy. Businesses that invest in skills and technology lift productivity. As more people move to higher-value work, growth accelerates. Countries must build a competitive business climate, strengthen trade, and invest in skills and health— especially for women and youth. When they all come together, they fuel job creation, productivity, and inclusion—making it possible to escape poverty.
